Rick Tucci: A True JKD Master

Rick Tucci is a true master. When taking notes for this commentary, I was mostly drawn to the topic of his standards, both for himself and his instructors and students. In today’s day and age, of weekend certifications, hearing an instructor who stresses quality and quantity over a pre-paid weekend was refreshing.

Rick explained that he is not the instructor who works with the goal of large bases, whether they are in his classes or instructors. He is more concerned with the quality of the individual that the person is becoming through the training. I believe that quality comes through his experience with learning under Tacky Kimura and Dan Inosanto.

I also was blessed with hearing a more mature view of martial arts training, as Rick not only has logged in several years of teaching, but is not getting older himself. Things he could do to is body years ago has taken their toll, therefore getting tips on what to and to not do was great information.

With a focus still on his academy, which looks more like a museum than a school, he also includes seminars in and outside of the US. In his late 50’s we also hope he continues his intense schedule, sharing his knowledge and life lessons.

Here’s a snippet of his audio interview:

James Wilks is in a unique position in the Jeet Kune Do world, as he is one of only a handful of MMA fighters who has roots in JKD. I think everyone will enjoy hearing James’ story from how he grew up in England, made it to the US, trained with some incredible JKD instructors, [...]

Rick Faye: A True Disciple of JKD

Rick Faye was a pleasure to interview because of his openness and wanting to share the insights he has learned. Tim Mousel: The Hidden Gem Of The JKD World

February 4, 2013

I believe that Tim Mousel is one of those “hidden gems” of the JKD world. He has trained with some of the biggest names in the martial arts world, ranging from Rickson Gracie to Dan Inosanto to Ajarn Surachai Sirisute. What also struck me was his humbleness, not only with his own accomplishments, but the [...]

Burton Richardson Proves that Luck has Nothing to do with Success; Perseverance Does

January 16, 2013

I think it is easy for us sometimes to look at a “successful” person, and point to luck as the main contributor to their achievement. Burton definitely had an up on many of his contemporaries by starting his training at the Kali Academy at such a young age. Starting early in life at anything is [...]

Wow. Just wow. The interview started out with some great background on the early-early days of Bruce Lee teaching and being introduced to the world. About nine minutes into the interview, my mind was swimming in information. I found myself continuing to tell myself, “focus, focus”, because every sentence Patrick Strong was saying contained so [...]

Richard Bustillo Shares Knowledge In An Exclusive Interview

November 19, 2012

When you interview a “first generation” JKD instructor, you get to peek into history, and see things from a perspective you rarely get to see. When interviewing Richard Bustillo, I was amazed on the ease of the interview, even though I was a bit nervous. Richard was very open to my questions, and gave very [...]

Tim Tacket Bares All In Audio Interview

November 5, 2012

In Social Psychology there is a person who is known as a “Connector”. Obviously, Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto would be known as connectors, or those who seem to know everyone. During my interview with Tim Tackett, I realized I was talking to another connector. This is a man who seems to know a lot [...]
